Our local curriculum includes all subjects required by the State of Illinois plus Religion.  The instructional program includes Language Arts (reading, phonics, English, spelling and handwriting), mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, physical education and computer science. As a Catholic school, the teaching of religion is a priority in the instructional program.  As an elementary school, the curriculum is designed to teach the basics and to provide experiences which will best prepare our students for their transition to high school.  Our curriculum is modified to meet the needs of our students.

  1. Pre-school:  Classes focus on socialization skills, learning to play and share with one another. The development of small and large motor skills through age appropriate activities is also emphasized.
  2. Pre-kindergarten:    Classes continue to focus on the development of social skills and initiate kindergarten readiness skills.
  3. Kindergarten:  The curriculum incorporates basic social skills, physical development and readiness levels in art, mathematics, language arts/reading/phonics, and physical and social sciences.
  4. Grades 1, 2 & 3:    In first, second and third grades, children are taught in self-contained classes where fundamental skills are emphasized and students are given experiences in becoming responsible for learning through age appropriate activities.
  5. Grades 4 & 5: The fourth and fifth grade students are taught mainly in self-contained classes, while being introduced to departmentalization in two classes.  Their curriculum is built upon materials and experiences introduced in the primary grades. It is designed to help prepare the students for the transition to junior high.
  6. Grades 6, 7 & 8:    The sixth, seventh and eighth grade classes are departmentalized.  The curriculum is designed to help prepare the students for their high school experience and is developed from the fundamental skills taught in earlier grades.
  7. Physical Education: Experiences to develop motor skills are necessary for learning.  Our Physical Education curriculum offers a well-rounded variety of age-appropriate activities that help produce healthy bodies, while developing the skills necessary for team participation and good sportsmanship.
  8. Music:  Experiences in developing fundamental skills and an appreciation of music are needed to develop the well-rounded individual. The music curriculum focuses on music appreciation, fundamental skills in music, liturgical music and basic cognitive skills relating to music. All students in grade K – 8 participate twice weekly.
  9. Art:  Students are given the opportunity to develop their artistic talents in various aspects of the school curriculum.  Formal Art classes are offered in grades four, five, six, seven and eight, with the course of study focusing on art appreciation, developing fundamental skills and basic concepts.
  10. Computer:  Basic skills and fundamental concepts are taught to utilize technology as a tool for learning. All students in grade K - 8 participate on a weekly basis. Classes are scheduled for formal instruction as well as for activities designed by the teachers to enhance other areas of the curriculum.

 DIBS (Divine Infant Broadcasting System)

Students are enhancing public communication skills through an integrated program involving Language Arts and Technology curriculum.

Eighth Grade students research, perform and edit a news broadcast on video each week which is then shown on television throughout the entire school.

AR Program

The “Accelerated Reader” story began with the commitment of principal, teachers, parents, and students to read the best of children’s literature, and to improve comprehension by taking a short test on the computer.

This program offers the winning combination of quality reading and computer technology.

Here's How It Works:

1

The student selects a book from the list provided by the teacher.

2

The student reads the book during free-time.

3

After completing the book, the student signs up to take a comprehension test on the computer.

4

The students receive points based on achievement on the test.

5

Students who make the “Top Ten Readers” list and the top readers in each class are recognized on “The Accelerated Reader Wall of Fame” outside the Library.

***     Reading is the key to all education success; Divine Infant School makes a sincere pledge to grow in reading comprehension. ***
